Root tendrils grow into the side of the container and are either pruned (causing branching growth inside the pot) or are redirected back to the center of the container. In conventional round plastic pots, roots grow to the container side then circle around. The plant can easily become rootbound without utilizing the full volume of the container. Also, with roots concentrated around the outside of the container, plants are more likely to be shocked during transplanting, and are also more subject to heat stress, since all the roots are concentrated near the outside of the pot where temperatures are more likely to vary.
